Overview:

This standard is applicable for coniferous sawn timber for components that shall be measured according to load bearing capacity. It specifies grading characteristics and classes as a prerequisite for the specification and application of calculation values for verifications of ultimate limit states and the fitness for purpose in accordance with, for instance, DIN 1052 or DIN 1074. Grading can take place using two methods: visually (in accordance with clause 6); - visually with support of technical devices (in accordance with clause 7). For certain application purposes of the timber, special standards apply regarding the grading according to load bearing capacity: DIN 68362 and DIN EN 131-2 for timber ladders, DIN 15147 for flat pallets. In this amendment, footnote a has been deleted from Table 2 in order to create the prerequisite to ensure applicability of the current edition of DIN 4074-1:2008-12 on a European level and its incorporation into the European Standard EN 1912. This had not yet been possible, as there was no verification which grade classes S 7 and S 10 amended by footnote a can be allocated to European strength classes. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 042-01-07 AA "Bauholz, Güte" ("Construction timber; Quality") at DIN.
