DVGW body of technical rules and standards

The German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW) has been setting technical standards for safe and reliable gas and water supply for more than 150 years. The DVGW collection defines requirements for gas and water supply and use related to:

  • safety, hygiene,
  • environmental protection, fitness for use,
  • consumer protection and organizational aspects.

  • The DVGW set of rules represent valuable practical experience - based on the years of accumulated knowledge of experts from the gas and water sector.

They are regularly reviewed and continuously updated. Through customized modules, each user can select rules for individual applications and obtain them via subscription.

By applying the DVGW technical rules and standards, you can be certain to work according to the rules of technology recognized by lawmakers and enjoy legal security.

  • This body of rules is targeted to all those who deal with the topics of gas and water professionally, such as: utility companies and municipal utilities, installers, consultants, engineers and chimney sweeps.

  • Anyone can apply to the DVGW Head Office to initiate the process of developing a technical rule or standard.

Applicants must provide technical justification for the application and identify a specific need.

Subsequently, expert committees discuss and ultimately decide on the application. If a decision is made to develop a new rule or revise an existing one, the responsible technical committee formulates a proposal for the responsible steering committee.

The preliminary analysis is usually prepared by the DVGW Head Office.

In the case of overarching topics, the proposal must be coordinated by the responsible technical committee and the technically relevant committees. The responsible steering committee decides on the basis of the proposal, usually within four weeks, whether there is a need for the creation of a rule or a revision.

  • Since 1859, the DVGW has been a modern and state-of-the-art institution that exchanges ideas and experiences while advancing the gas and water sector in both technical and organisational respects. Back then, and still today, the focus is on safety and efficiency as well as environmental and consumer protection in the energy and water industry.
