With the entry into force of the Ordinance on the Avoidance and Recovery of Packaging Waste (Packaging Ordinance - VerpackV) on August 21, 1998 (BGBI. I S. 2379), the correct determination of packaging weights has for the first time obtained considerable economic importance. It was further enhanced by the 5. Regulation to the modification of the Packaging Ordinance from April 02, 2008 (Federal Law Gazette I p. 531), which additionally introduced - under certain conditions - the obligation to deposit a weight-based declaration of completeness of sales packaging placed on the market at the responsible local Chamber of Industry and Commerce on an annual basis. The DIN Technical Report specifies processes for the physical weighing of sales packaging and thereby specific rules for determining the packaging weight. The following categories of material are taken into account: - glass; - paper and board; - tinplate; - aluminium; - composites; - plastics; - other materials (such as wood, textiles, stoneware). The DIN Technical Report does not contain specifications regarding the assessment of sales packaging characteristics. The body responsible for this DIN Technical Report is NA 115-01-05 AA "Volumen und Gewichte" ("Volumes and weights") at DIN.
