This specification describes an optical backplane using optical fibre boards and multi-core right angle optical connectors with low bending loss optical fibres (hereafter called low-loss RAO) to connect daughter boards to the optical backplane. Optical connectors are a special challenge in the field of connecting hardware of exchangeable fibre circuit boards in housings as the precision and self-discovery of the connectors is particularly demanding. The standard describes multi-fibre ferrule connectors. The responsible committee is K 412 "Kommunikationskabel (Kabel, Leitungen, Wellenleiter, Lichtwellenleiter, Komponenten, Zubehör und Anlagentechnik für die Nachrichten- und Informationsübertragung") ("Communication cables (Cables, wires, waveguides, fibre optics, components, equipment and installation technology for the transmission of news and information)") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
