This document uses relevant terms and definitions to highlight important aspects of the use of free-form technology in ophthalmic optics. It is addressed to all members of the ophthalmic community, both on the part of the optician trade and the corresponding training and further education institutions, as well as on the part of the ophthalmic industry. It is also addressed to the manufacturers of production machines and measuring instruments used in the manufacture of ophthalmic lenses. The definitions contained in the document also serve the national positioning and the contribution to the on-going activities of the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) in this field. At the same time, results from these consultations have also been incorporated into the document. For this reason, the document has been prepared in a bilingual German-English version. The document reflects the current status and language usage. At the same time, an attempt has been made to use the definitions according to DIN EN ISO 13666:2013-10 or to use new terms analogously. Working Group NA 027-01-08-09 AK "Charakterisierung von Freiformflächen" ("Characterization of free form surfaces") at DIN Standards Committee Optics and Precision Mechanics (NAFuO) is responsible for this document.
