Overview

The specification for IP telemetry has its origins in metering products for measuring electrical energy consumption; it can also be used as a generic solution for many comparable use cases in automation technology and is thus generally usable in the area of machine-to-machine, M2M, interfaces. The specification for IP telemetry describes the protocol for solving this task using terms that are as abstract as possible so that, on the one hand, manufacturers are able to design their products to meet this specification as freely as possible and, on the other hand, their integration into the surrounding set of standards is facilitated. For the concrete transport of messages, the IP telemetry specification requires connection-oriented transport channels that are secured and equipped with mechanisms for error detection. The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) can be regarded as an example of such a use case. In addition, it should be explicitly stated that IP telemetry can also use any other connection with the same basic quality as a transport medium. The use of IP telemetry over unsecured and/or connectionless communication links is not intended. The responsible committee is DKE/K 461 "Elektrizitätszähler" ("Electricity meters") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
