Overview

This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of the EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to cranes which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Communities, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). The terms - HD classes - are explained in a new Annex B (informative) by means of illustrations and description. The content has not been changed with respect to EN 13001-2:2004+A3:2009. This European Standard is to be used together with Part 1 and series of Part 3 and as such they specify general conditions, requirements and methods to prevent hazards of cranes by design and theoretical verification. Part 3 is in the consensus phase (technical coordination); the complete use of Parts 1 and 2 assumes the publication of Part 3. The following is a list of significant hazardous situations and hazardous events that could result in risks to persons during normal use (of the crane) and foreseeable misuse. Clause 4 of this standard is necessary to reduce or eliminate the risks associated with the following hazardous situations: a) rigid body instability of the crane or its parts (tilting and shifting); b) exceeding the limits of strength (yield, ultimate, fatigue); c) exceeding temperature limits of material or components; d) elastic instability of the crane or its parts; e) exceeding the deformation limits.
