Overview

This European Standard applies to chamois leather for cleaning purposes and defines both requirements and standard test methods. Chamois leather is an oil tanned sheep pelt, split with or without prior tanning. Only first choice ovine skins of suitable collection areas are used. Chamois leather is primarily used for cleaning purposes and in particular for drying and polishing smooth surfaces, such as car bodies and windows. The properties of chamois leather are the rapid absorption and release of water, performances that remain unaltered even after a long usage period. Generally, chamois leather is trimmed before sale only in order to achieve uniformity and symmetry of its surface. Chamois leathers have the natural colour conferred by the oil tanning, homogeneous and uniform all over the surface. Their appearance is soft, velvety on both sides and without any traces of grain, holes, cuts or cracks. This document has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 289 "Leather", the secretariat of which is held by UNI. The national committee responsible is NA 062-05-51 AA "Anforderungen und physikalische Prüfverfahren für Leder und seine Ausgangsprodukte" ("Requirements and physical test methods for leather and ") at the Materials Testing Standards Committee (NMP) at DIN.
