Short description
This European Standard describes the Standard Reference Method (SRM) with three alternative analytical techniques for determining gaseous chlorides content emitting to atmosphere from ducts and stacks. The specific components and the requirements for the measuring system are described. A number of performance characteristics with associated minimum performance criteria are specified for the measuring system. This European standard can be used as a SRM provided the overall uncertainty of the method is less than 30,0 % at a given daily Emission Limit Value (ELV) for, e. g., incineration and large combustion plants or or other HCl emitting plants. An Alternative Method to this SRM may be used provided that the user can demonstrate equivalence according to the Technical Specification CEN/TS 14793.This method determines the concentration of chlorinated compounds that give Cl--ions in the absorption solution. This Standard Reference Method has been evaluated during field tests on waste incineration. The method applies to waste gases in which chlorides concentration expressed as HCl may vary between 1 mg·m-3 and 5000 mg·m-3.
Overview

This European Standard specifies the Standard Reference Method for the determination of the concentration of gaseous chlorides in stationary source emissions (for instance waste incineration plants). The sampling equipment for extracting gas samples from exhaust gases is described in detail and its necessary capacity is defined through minimum requirements. Three alternative analytical techniques are permitted for the determination the chloride content in chloride containing absorption solutions obtained during sampling: ion-exchange chromatography, photometry and potentiometry. The method can be used as the Standard Reference Method, if the uncertainty for a given emission limit value is less than 30 % for a special type of plant. The chlorides concentration is expressed as HCl. The method has been validated during field tests on waste incineration plants. It applies to waste gases in which chlorides concentration is between 1 mg/m3 and 5 000 mg/m3. This standard is relevant for plant operators, measurement institutes and supervising authorities.
