This new series of completely revised and re-structured assembly standards will eventually replace the previous parts of the IEC 60439 series, which will become obsolete. However, for a transitional period, parts of the IEC 60439 series (covering specific types of assembly) which are not yet transferred into the new IEC 61439 series shall still be used in conjunction with IEC 60439-1 as the content of IEC 61439-1 does not align with that of IEC 60439. For the new re-structured IEC 61439 standard series the following parts are envisaged: - IEC 61439-1: General rules - IEC 61439-2: Power switchgear and controlgear assemblies - IEC 61439-3: Distribution boards (to supersede IEC 60439-3) - IEC 61439-4: Assemblies for construction sites (to supersede IEC 60439-4) - IEC 61439-5: Assemblies for power distribution (to supersede IEC 60439-5) - IEC 61439-6: Busbar trunking systems (busways) (to supersede IEC 60439-2) The purpose of Part 1 (IEC 61439-1) of these standards is to harmonize, to the greatest possible extent, all rules and requirements of a general nature applicable to low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies in order to obtain uniformity of requirements and verification for similar types of switchgear and controlgear assemblies, and to avoid the need for verification to other standards. All common requirements for the various assemblies standards have therefore been gathered in this basic standard together with subjects of wide interest and application, for instance temperature rise, insulation characteristics, and so on. For each type of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assembly only two main documents are necessary to determine all requirements and the corresponding methods of verification: 1) this basic standard referred to as "Part 1" in the specific standards covering the various types of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies; 2) the specific assembly standard hereinafter also referred to as the "relevant assembly standard". Part 2 (IEC 61439-2) of these standards defines the specific requirements of power switchgear and control gear assemblies with a rated voltage of not more than 1 000 V a.c. or 1 500 V a.c. This standard shall be read in conjunction with Part 1 (IEC 61439-1). The responsible Committee is Subcommittee UK 431.1 "Niederspannungs-Schaltgerätekombinationen" ("Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
