Overview

This standard contains the German version of European Standard EN 62209-2:2010 and is identical to the International Standard IEC 62209-2:2010. It serves the measurement of the specific absorption rate (SAR) in relation to the safety of persons in electromagnetic fields of wireless communication devices in the frequency range of 30 MHz to 6 GHz. It applies to such devices which are kept in close proximity to the human body for use. In particular, the following types of use or operating positions of wireless communication devices are considered: - general devices of this type - devices carried on the body - devices supported by the body - devices operated on tables - devices located in front of the face - devices held in the hand - devices attached to the limbs - devices integrated in clothing. Examples include mobile telephone for uses other than on the head (IEC 62209-1 or EN 62209-1 is applicable here), two-way radio installations, cameras, video cameras, wireless operating PDAs, head sets, laptops with radio modules and tablet computers. The purpose of this standard is to specify the method for verification of conformity of limit values for the specific absorption rate (SAR) by the devices included in this standard. For the measurement, the electromagnetic fields of the device to be measured are emitted on a phantom (replica of the body); the electromagnetic field strengths produced in the phantom are determined by means of a field probe. The SAR distribution and the maximum averaged SAR value are subsequently calculated from the measurement values gained. The measurement shall be performed in a test laboratory which needs to fulfil certain ambient conditions. The physical characteristics of the phantom (size and shape) shall be similar to the body of a user, as the shape represents an essential exposure parameter. The phantom model shall be made of a material with dielectric characteristics which are similar to the tissue of the body. In order to attempt a field scanning within the phantom, the material is required to be liquid and contained in a shell model which simulates the body. The corresponding specifications for the phantom are contained in this standard, whereby reference is made to the corresponding specifications of IEC 62209-1 or EN 62209-1. The hand holding the device does not need to be modelled but a special holder is used for this. Furthermore, this standard contains the description of the measurement method. For this purpose, the device to be measured shall be prepared and monitored, and measured in the positions described in the standard. The individual steps of the measurement are described in the standard. They consist of the measurement of the centre frequency, determination of the most unfavourable position if the previous step has been executed, and the final determination of the maximum. The method of measurement can be accelerated under certain conditions. The apparatus to be used, including the phantom or the tissue-equivalent liquid contained therein shall be calibrated. The corresponding specifications are also dealt with in this standard. Furthermore, specifications for the SAR evaluation and measurement report are explained more precisely in the standard. Finally, specifications for the determination of measurement uncertainty are contained in this standard. The responsible Committee is K 764 "Sicherheit in elektromagnetischen Feldern" ("Safety in electromagnetic fields") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Informational Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
