Overview

Companies within the aerospace industry need to keep data to fulfil business, certification and legal requirements. For modern definitions this data is usually digital. These requirements lead to requirements which shall be considered regarding the retention of digital data; amongst others, how can be ensured that digital data is not altered and is also readable in the future. In this context the aerospace industry requirements shall be taken into account. Currently, for CAD software, the period between versions is of the order of 6 months to 12 months, while between generations is of the order of 3 years to 10 years. This shall be compared to an aircraft life cycle which may be 30 years to 50 years or longer. For digital data, the challenge is that the data are often stored in a proprietary, native format and will most likely become not interpretable after a time. The use of a neutral archiving data format safeguards the interpretability of the stored data for a much longer time, perhaps for the entire retention period. The DIN EN 9300 standard series contains the multidimensional aspects of Long-Term Archiving and Retrieving of digital technical product documentation on the basis of standardized formats in combination with permanent and frequent migration into other storage media and, if necessary, data formats. Part 014 provides a detailed description for the recommended process of retrieval of 3D and PDM data. A main focus lies in the secure process, which implies the defined search for archived data elements and the dissemination of the data packages, which includes, for example, the check for digital signatures or the validation of archived data as overviewed in EN 9300-010. Standard DIN EN 9300-014 can be applied to new 3-D product data records and to existing 3D product data records, on current and earlier products, produced using previous regulations, standards and procedures. The EN 9300 standard series was prepared jointly by ASD-STAN and the PROSTEP iViP Association. The PROSTEP iViP Association is an international non-profit association in Europe with nearly 200 members from leading industries, system vendors and research institutions in IT-based engineering. It is actively engaged in product and process data standardization activities at European and worldwide levels. This document EN 9300-014:2012 has been prepared by ASD-STAN, Technical Section General. The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) declared the Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD-STAN) responsible for the preparation of European standards (EN) for the field of aerospace. ASD became the associated body (ASB) of CEN by the agreement dated 1986-10-03. The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 131-05-01 AA "Grundlagen und Managementverfahren (Spiegelausschuss zu ISO/TC 20/SC 14)" ("Basic principles of management processes (Mirror committee of ISO/TC 20/SC 14)") of the Aerospace Standards Committee at DIN.
