This International Standard describes two methods for the determination of particle density of soils calculated from the mass and volume of soil particles. The first method is applicable to fine soil (less than 2 mm diameter) and the second method is applicable to soils containing porous and nonporous gravel and stones (more than 2 mm diameter). The particle density may be used for the calculation of the portion of solids and of the porosity of soil layers in combination with the procedures given in ISO 11272. This International Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 190 "Soil quality" and has been taken over by CEN/TC 345 "Characterization of soils" without any modification. The responsible German body is NA 119-01-02-02 UA "Chemische und physikalische Verfahren" ("Chemical and physical methods") of the DIN Standards Committee Water Practice (NAW).
