Dear Customer,
This year, on the occasion of our 100th anniversary, we will be positioning ourselves for the future as part of the DIN Group with a new name.
And so as of April 22, 2024
Beuth Verlag will become DIN Media.
You can find out more about our new name and the reasons behind it here.
Yours sincerely,

This standard specifies the requirements for flame arresters that prevent flame transmission when explosive gas-air or vapour-air mixtures are present. It establishes uniform principles for the classification, basic construction and information for use, including the marking of flame arresters, and specifies test methods to verify the safety requirements and determine safe limits of use. This standard is valid for pressures ranging from 80 kPa to 160 kPa and temperatures ranging from -20 °C to + 150 °C. This standard is not applicable to the following: - external safety-related measurement and control equipment that might be required to keep the operational conditions within the established safe limits; - flame arresters used for explosive mixtures of vapours and gases, which tend to self-decompose (such as acetylene) or which are chemically unstable; - flame arresters used for carbon disulphide, due to its special properties; - flame arresters whose intended use is for mixtures other than gas-air or vapour-air mixtures (for example higher oxygen-nitrogen ratio, chlorine as oxidant, etcetera); - flame arrester test procedures for internal-combustion compression ignition engines; - fast acting valves, extinguishing systems and other explosion isolating systems. This standard differs from DIN EN ISO 16852:2010-09 as follows: a) information concerning the existing standard from IMO (International Maritime Organisation) for maritime application has been added; b) the definition of the dynamic flame arrester has been revised; c) the abbreviation for the time tPpeak has been added; d) the production test procedure for flame arresters of welded construction and of cast components has been revised; e) the flow measurement (air) has been revised; f) in the flame transmission test for stable and unstable detonation, the deflagration tests with Lu/D = 5 have been deleted; g) the formula for the calculation of the average value pmd has been added; h) the figures for the test apparatus for deflagration tests of end-of-line flame arresters and of pre-volume flame arresters have been revised; i) the figures for the test apparatus for the short time burning test and for the endurance burning test have been revised; j) the short time burning test for inline flame arresters has been revised; k) the test pressure for the endurance burning test of inline flame arresters has been added; l) the limits for use of short time burn flame arresters have been added; m) the flame transmission test for liquid product detonation flame arresters has been revised; n) Clause 9 "Specific requirements for dynamic flame arresters (high velocity vent valves) " has been revised; o) Clause 11 "Test of flame arresters installed on or within gas conveying equipment" has been added; p) Clause "Instructions for use" has been revised; q) Clause "Marking" has been revised; r) in Figure A.1, the pipe lengths have been revised; s) Annex C "Best practice" has been revised; t) Annex D "Use of in-line stable detonation flame arresters" has been deleted; u) the Bibliography has been updated. This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 21 "Equipment for fire protection and fire fighting" (secretariat Korea). The international work was accompanied at European level by CEN/TC 305/WG 6 "Flame Arresters". The standard was submitted to and accepted by the CEN consultant for the EC Directive 2014/34/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 February 2014 on the harmonization of the laws of the Member States concerning equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX) for examination with regard to compliance with this EC Directive. Working Committee NA 104-02-05 AA "Flammendurchschlagssicherungen und Tanklüftungseinrichtungen" ("Flame arresters and tank venting systems") at DIN Standards Committee Tank Installations (NATank) participated in preparation of the standard.
