This standard applies for plugs and socket-outlets for alternating current only, with or without protective contact, with a rated voltage exceeding 50 V, but not exceeding 440 V and with a rated current not exceeding 32 A intended for household and similar purposes, indoors or outdoors. This standard is also applicable for plugs in cordsets and cable reels and socket-outlets in extension cables. It also applies to plugs which are a component of a device unless not stated otherwise in the standard for the concerning device, and for plugs and socket-outlets for difficult conditions as well as plug-in devices with miniature fuses in accordance with DIN EN 60127 (VDE 0820). The responsible committee is Subcommittee UK 542.1 "Schalter und Steckvorrichtungen für den Hausgebrauch und ähnliche Zwecke" ("Switches and plug and socket devices for household and similar purposes") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
