A Warehouse Management refers to the management, control and optimization of warehouse- and distribution-systems within the warehouse(including quantity- and location-management as well as transportation-management and -disposition), with extensive methods and means for monitoring and controlling the states of the system and with choices of strategies for operating and optimization. The purpose of a warehouse management system (WMS) is the management and optimization of the internal systems for storage and transportation. To provide the WMS, it is necessary that the subordinate systems provide throughput, data quality and stability. The standard describes tasks and performance of an IT system for warehouse management. The terms and abbreviations are defined, the administrative and functional environment is described and the integration of a warehouse management system (WMS) in lower- and upper-level IT systems is explained.
