Short description
Biomonitoring, the application of biological systems for spatial and/or temporal monitoring of environmental changes, conduces to the direct survey of harmful environmental impacts by bioindicators. By their immediate effect recording, herbal response indicators enable risk observations for vegetation – protected resource plants – and for agricultural and horticultural production. Tobacco plants (cultivars of tobacco Nicotiana tabacum), exposed according to standardised specifications, can directly show impacts caused by ground-level ozone and photooxidants in ambient air (response indicator). The visible leaf injury is used as the effect measure. The standard defines the proceedings including cultivation of plants and exposure. In addition, it describes the methods of recording and evaluation of the leaf injury for determining the ozone impact.
