Short description
By means of biological measuring techniques (bioindication), accumulation of air pollutants in plants can be determined quantitatively as immission-induced effects. In order to be able to classify and assess the substance content in standardised plant cultures, assessment values are consulted, which are deduced from representative survey results. The standard presents a suitable statistical method with which these assessment values can be generated as robust upper limits of substance contents in standardised grass cultures characteristic for background situations. The substance contents determined in this way reflect the operation-induced background contents including their fluctuation. They are called "orientation values for maximum background level" (OmH). The OmH allow for assessing whether an immission-induced effect in excess of the background contamination is on hand. The calculation method described in the standard applies to inorganic elements, in particular to metals. Medium and low-volatile organic compounds are supposed to be dealt with in a further part of the series of standards. In addition, supra-regional and a number of regional OmH for selected inorganic air pollutants are listed in the standard, in case that the data basis of a concrete individual survey for determination of a regional OmH is not sufficient. The standard addresses approving and surveillance authorities and in particular executing operators such as environmental engineering offices.
