Overview

This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and ATEX Directive 94/9/EC, and which apply to atomising and spraying equipment for coating materials which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Union, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This European Standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events which are relevant for both manual and automatic atomising and spraying equipment for application of coating materials on workpieces. In this standard, the term "machine" is used equivalently to "atomising and spraying equipment" and "applicator". Together with this standard, EN 50050, EN 50059, EN 50176, EN 50177 or EN 50348 give requirements for electrostatic applicators. The specific significant risks related to the use of this machinery with foodstuffs and pharmaceutical products are not dealt with in this standard. This standard is only applicable to machinery which is used as intended. It also covers hazards arising from conditions which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer. This standard contains the German version of EN 1953:2013 which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 271 "Surface treatment equipment - Safety" at the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). In comparison with DIN EN 1953:2010-09, fundamental changes have been made. The significant changes in the new edition are as follows: a) Scope 1) it has been clarified that the specific significant risks related to the use of atomising and spraying equipment with foodstuffs and pharmaceutical products are not dealt with in this standard. b) clause 2 1) normative references have been updated c) clause 5 Safety requirements and/or measures has been rendered more precise, in particular with regard to 1) insufficient mechanical strength (5.2.2) 2) ejection of fluids (5.2.3) 3) ejection of objects (5.2.4) 4) thermal effects (5.4) 5) noise (5.5) 6) explosion (5.6) 7) dangerous substances (5.7) 8) malfunction (5.9) d) ergonomic requirements (5.8) e) clause 7 1) the requirements for the information for use have been rendered more precise 2) the requirements for marking have been rendered more precise f) Informative Annex ZA on the relationship between this European Standard and the Essential Requirements of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC has been adapted g) Informative Annex ZB on the Relationship between this European Standard and the Essential Requirements of ATEX Directive 94/9/EC has been included. The national interests during the preparation were represented by Technical Section General Ventilation of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of manufacturers and users of machinery for the supply and circulation of coating materials, and of the employers' liability insurance associations contributed to this standard.
