Overview

The present standard is based on the current view of the railroad experts represented in CENELEC/SC9XA WGA4-2 that track circuits and axle counters will remain the two most important train detection systems in the foreseeable future. In order to meet future requirements for compatibility between train detection systems and rolling stock, and to promote interoperability and unimpeded movement within the European Union, it is necessary to define "frequency management" including a seamless set of interface requirements. This European Standard specifies the technical parameters of track circuits related to the emission limits of the disturbance current for rolling stock in the context of interoperability defined in terms of frequency management. The limits currently recommended in this standard for compatibility between rolling stock and train detection systems enable measures to be taken against known phenomena of interference in connection with the traction current supply and for the associated protection (overvoltage, short-circuit current and basic transition effects such as inrush current or current cut-off). These effects are assessed with modelling tools that have been verified by the former European research project RAILCOM. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 351.3 "Bahn-Signalanlagen" ("Signalling systems for railways") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
