Overview

The standard specifies the performance characteristics of instruments as used in the non-invasive measurements of X-ray tube voltage up to 150 kV and the relevant compliance tests to verify that these requirements are met. This standard also describes the method for calibration and gives guidance for estimating the uncertainty in measurements performed under conditions different from those during calibration. Applications for such measurement are found in diagnostic radiology including mammography, computed tomography, dental radiology and radioscopy. The standard is not concerned with the safety aspect of such instruments. The requirements for electrical safety applying to them are contained in DIN EN 61010-1. The first amendment A1 of the basic standard, which contains additional specifications, taking into account aging of the X-ray tube anode, has been introduced in the standard. The higher the age of an X-ray tube, the more the anode roughens, depending on the cumulative heat load during its total operation time. The roughening of the anode results in a hardening of the spectral photon distribution, which is simulated by additional tungsten filtration. The International Standard has been prepared by IEC/SC 62C "Equipment for radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and radiation dosimetry" , with the German collaboration of national Joint Committee NA 080-00-11 Joint Working Committee NAR/DKE "Dosimetry" of Radiology Standards Committee (NAR) of DIN, the German Institute for Standardization, collaborating with Deutsche Röntgengesellschaft (German Radiological Society) and DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
