Overview

A significant number of electrical energy storage (EES) systems have already been integrated into existing grid systems. EES systems play a key role in the operation of modern power grids. The integration of EES systems into grid systems can bring further benefits, such as efficient uses in renewable energy sources. A variety of electrical energy storage technologies are used in large and small sizes for residential, industrial, utility company applications as well as renewable energy stabilization. An EES system is an integrated system with well-standardized components; however, system aspects specifically related to environmental aspects of EES systems have not been sufficiently discussed. In addition, environmental aspects for the product level have been discussed horizontally in other IEC documents; however, specific environmental aspects of EES systems have not been sufficiently discussed. Therefore, a standard procedure for the assessment of environmental aspects in EES systems is urgently needed. Under these circumstances, this document describes principles and approaches for environmental aspects of EES systems under conditions of normal operation as well as extraordinary operation, and it presents guidelines for the mitigation of environmental impacts on and from EES systems, including chronic impacts on humans. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 261.1 DKE/UK 261.1 "Elektrische Energiespeichersysteme" (Electrical Energy Storage Systems) of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
