Overview

This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Union, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events relevant to ovens and dryers in which flammable substances are released by evaporation from and curing of coating materials. It contains the German version of EN 1539:2015 prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 271 "Surface treatment equipment - Safety" of the European Committee of Standardization (CEN). This standard differs from EN 1539:2010-08 as follows: a) the scope no longer excludes the application of the standard to dryers intended for the production of pharmaceutical products or food production, but indicates that the significant risks arising from the use of a dryer for these applications are not covered by the standard; b) sintering ovens are no longer excluded from the scope; c) combined spray and drying booths are no longer excluded from the scope; d) under 4. 7.1, the hazard due to lack of oxygen in inert dryers has been added; e) the explosion protection requirements for type A dryers (5.9.1) have been reorganized and expanded; f) the explosion protection requirements for type B dryers (5.9. 2) have been reorganized and extensively supplemented; g) the requirements for control systems (5. 10) have been extensively supplemented for both dryer types; h) in Annex B the examples have been revised and supplemented with graphical representations; i) Annex C "Concentration measurement in dryers" has been revised; j) a new Annex D "Calculation of the lower explosion limit at drying temperature" has been introduced; k) the former Annex D "Explosion venting" is now Annex E; l) a new Annex F "Sensors for volume flow measurement" has been introduced; m) a new Annex G "Requirements for energy efficiency and reduction of environmental impact" has been introduced; n) a new Annex H "Guidance on the implementation of requirements of controls for explosion protection in type A dryers" has been introduced; o) Annex ZA "Relationship between this European Standard and the essential requirements of EC Directive 97/37/EC" has been deleted; p) the former Annex ZB "Relationship between this European Standard and the essential requirements of EC Directive 2006/42/EC" is now Annex ZA. The national interests during preparation were represented by Committee NA 060-09-44-1 AA "Lacktrockner" ("Lacquer coat dryers") in the Technical Section "Allgemeine Lufttechnik" ("Air-handling Technology") of Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of the manufacturers and users of dryers in which flammable substances are released and of the employers' liability insurance associations were involved in the preparation.
