Overview

This International Standard specifies quantitative test methods to evaluate the antibacterial activity of footwear and components. The document is applicable to all types of footwear and components employing non-diffusing antibacterial treatments. The user can select the most appropriate of the following methods to assess antibacterial activity: a) Qualitative method (halogen test). This is the test method for estimation of the antibacterial activity of footwear products which have received a subsequent antibacterial treatment using halogens and is applicable when the chemicals for the subsequent antibacterial treatment can be easily diffused in a plated agar culture medium. b) Quantitative method (absorption test). This is the test method for estimation of the antibacterial activity of footwear products receiving an antibacterial treatment for which a bacteriostatic activity value or a bacterial activity value is used. The test standard is directed at manufacturers and distributors of footwear as well as testing laboratories. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 062-04-52 AA "Schuhe" ("Footwear") at DIN.
