Overview

This International Standard specifies safety and performance requirements and test methods for the design, assembly and testing of fully assembled bicycles and sub-assemblies for young children. It also provides guidelines for instructions on the use and care of the bicycles. This International Standard is applicable to bicycles with a maximum saddle height of more than 435 mm and less than 635 mm, propelled by a transmitted drive to the rear wheel. This standard is not applicable to special bicycles intended for performing stunts (such as BMX bicycles). Safety requirements for bicycles intended for the use by adults and children of at least 8 years of age on public roads (that are bicycles with a saddle height of 635 mm and more) are provided by ISO 4210. ISO 8098 is based on ISO 4210, but this standard specifies requirements for bicycles biked by young children at the age between 4 years and 8 years. These bicycles are not intended to be bikes on public roads and are classified as not fully equipped for that purpose. In regard to safety requirements for toy bicycles for very young children refer to EN 71-1. The body responsible for this standard is NA 112-06-01 AA "Fahrräder für allgemeine und sportliche Benutzung" ("Cycles for common and athletic use") at DIN.
